A New Crafty DIY Project

Thought for today: Even at it’s worst, life is still pretty damn good.

I have a brand new crafty DIY project to share today but first, a few thoughts to get off my mind.

Relaxing into Life

I am breathing so much easier after my last post.

Being so overwhelmed (which I know I did to myself) was really killing every part of my life because it sunk me into even more depression. I suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) so the winter months are especially tough on me. Throw in even more depression and *BAM*, the perfect storm of hopelessness.

I found that I was losing interest in everything…my blog, art journaling, all aspects of creativity, even my relationships were suffering due to that stupid depression of mine. I hate that things in my life that I love suffer because of my depression. It’s a horrible, horrible mental illness.

Believe me.

Since deciding to just relax and be myself here on my blog, my heart feels lighter as does my head.

So, moving on…

A Little Art Making

My husband can be hard to buy for and he actually likes gifts I have made for him in the past. For Valentines day this year I made him this watercolor heart piece.

I still have to mat and frame it but I really think he’ll like it.

Just by working on this little piece, I could feel my creative mojo stirring to life. Man o man, does it feel good, too. Welcome back my beloved imagination and inspiration, oh how I have missed you!

Anywho…

Crafty DIY Goodness

I picked up some bamboo cutting boards on sale a while back, not sure what I was going to do with them. I do that sometimes, buy things not knowing how they will fit into my creative juicy-ness. Always positive I’ll find a crafty way with my often crazy imagination. It’s something I’ve done for a very long time but I really need to curtail doing it. I realized that I have too much stuff so it’s time to do something with the things I already have in waiting.

But, I digress…

I needed to figure out how I was going to use these cutting boards…and I finally did!

There were three cutting boards and decided to do one for each of my daughters (who I miss so much since they both live away from me now) and one for my mother-in-law. I knew these three would appreciate a handmade something because, lets be honest here, not everyone is appreciates handmade things. To each his (or her) own.

But I felt sure these three women would enjoy something crafty from me…

So, I got to work!

What & How…

I decided I would use my woodburning tool to make them each personalized. After I finished woodburning the outline of each letter and looking at them, I felt something was missing.

That’s when I decided to use some wood stain inside each of the letters to really make the words stand out. It worked beautifully!

After letting them dry for a couple of days, I put a light coat of clear sealant. I let that dry for a few hours. Then I coated each with multiple coats of Dishwasher -Safe Mod Podge, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before the next coat.

This will allow the girls and my MIL to all use these (on the backside) for cutting, then wash them and display the front side (if they choose) on a little plate stand on their kitchen counters. With this Mod Podge, the decorative side is protected and sealed, even when immersed in water.

I know they will be happy to get these little gifts. They aren’t a big something but they were made with lots of love…and I do think they look pretty cool, too. I just hope they each like them.

This is the one I made for my daughter Savannah.

I’m pretty happy with how they turned out and can’t wait for them to find them in the mail in the next few days.

*Doing the happy dance*

Coming up…

I’m hoping to have a lots to share with you soon so be sure to subscribe to my feed.

I have lots of projects to finish up and a couple to get started in the next few days. I’m going to try and do some work in my art journal, too. It has been far too long.

And hey, while you’re here, I’d love it if you’d drop a quick comment. I mean, just to let me know I’m not over here talking to myself.LOL

Until next time…

Welcome to My World

Welcome to My World

Welcome y’all, I’m Barb…aka That Crafty Chick!

You can’t imaging how glad I am that we could meet up like this today.  I have been so looking forward to having a cup of coffee and a little chat about all the wonderful things I have in store for you here in the coming months.

Before we get too far, please know that I am not a web designer or a blogging guru by any stretch of the imagination so things may be a little messy as I get settled in and get things situated. I do hope you’ll overlook the mess. Actually, it’s a bit like coming over to my house for coffee…a little cluttered but don’t be afraid to put your feet up on the coffee table and make yourself comfy.

I am beyond ecstatic to finally be here!!

I used to blog a lifetime ago but I’ve spent the past couple of years soul searching what it is that I am passionate about, what truly makes my heart leap for joy.No matter where I search, I always come back around to creativity…my art journals, crafting, planning, sewing, painting, cooking and baking, DIY, gardening/plants and a plethora of other creative endeavors.

Now, I bet you are asking yourself what makes That Crafty Chick any different than a bazillion other blogs out there? Well, a few things:
  1. Me. My creativity and point of view are quite original;
  2. My intense need to keep things simple and honest;
  3. I am real and down to earth (just like you);
  4. I am unbelievably cheap.

How does any of that benefit you?

Do you want to create, craft, decorate, and entertain but don’t have a millionaire’s budget? Or even a thousandaire’s budget? I feel ya, I don’t either. What I do have are some great ways to to keep your creative juices flowing, perk up your abode, fill your tummy, and entertain your friends and family, all for little to no cash.Now we’re talking, just the way I like it, cheap!

So you’ll be making ugly cheap crap???

Oh, hell no!Like you, I’ve seen so many ideas floating around that are one or the other, cute OR cheap, but seldom does an idea seem to be both. Remember, I’m just like you, I want things that look like a million bucks but only cost me $1.98.

Trust me, you won’t find anything that looks like it belongs at the city dump or that it was made by the hands of a three year old around here. No way! We’re talking about the good stuff, the stuff that you will be proud to show off to friends or to give as gifts, I promise. Pinky swear, even.

So, you’re just going to be another craft blog?

Hell no, not at all. We are going to be doing lots of creative things but not just crafts.

I’ll be introducing many of you to art journaling; we’ll do some furniture refinishing and re-upholstery; we will head down the rabbit hole of PLANNER love and I’m even creating some super cute (but not hokey) FREE printables for all you planner chicks already out there; some great tutorials and techniques are in the future; genuine southern recipes for real people (and trust me, you won’t find kale in any of them!); and so much more.

I hope you will stick around and see what I have to share with you in the coming weeks and months. I will be dropping in a few times a week, bringing you ideas that are fresh, fun, and best of all, frugal!

Nothin’ like pinching some pennies while getting our craft on, am I right?

What you can look forward to coming up in this month:

  • Lots of Planner goodies;
  • Almost Free Thanksgiving Decorating;
  • A Frugal Family Feast;
  • Thrifty and Beautiful Holiday Wreaths;
  • Creative Jar Re-uses;
  • DIY Gift Ideas (that you still have time to make!);
  • Getting a jump on Holiday Baking;
  • and more, more, more!
